Mindfulness: What to Expect from Your First Session

Mindfulness is a skill and practice that can impact your life in a huge range of positive ways, both during our work together and throughout the rest of your life.

We love working with people in our one-to-one mindfulness programs. Mindfulness is a skill and practice that can impact your life in a huge range of positive ways, both during our work together and throughout the rest of your life.

These one-to-one sessions aren’t “therapy”, in the same way as counselling, psychotherapy or CBT, but they are often therapeutic. These sessions aren’t just about education and skill building. They are also a space where you can share what’s happening for you, and reflect on your experience with the support of a skilled practitioner.

We know that people come to mindfulness for all kinds of reasons, including health issues, stress, anxiety, and depression. We also regularly work with people who are most interested in personal development and achieving their full potential, and we help them use mindfulness and meditation to be the most effective and fulfilled they can be.

Getting Started

The first session is all about introductions and laying the foundations for our work. We’ll talk about what mindfulness is and how it works. We’ll talk about what you can expect from the sessions, as well as your intentions for our work together. We’ll ask you about your current situation, any previous experiences with therapy or mindfulness practices. This is a chance for you to share your story and for us to understand your unique needs and goals.

Confidentiality

One of our top priorities is to make sure that your privacy is protected and respected. So before asking you to share anything, we’ll talk you through a standard privacy contract, which gives clear guarantees regarding the privacy and confidentiality of everything you share during our work together. We follow strict codes of conduct and ethics and follow industry standard guidelines on data protection.

Mindfulness

We’d usually spend a bit of time talking about the basic principles of mindfulness, including being present in the moment, non-judgmental awareness, and self-compassion. This is also a great time for you to ask any questions you might have about mindfulness and everything that goes with it. As we move forward, these are conversations that we’ll naturally refer back to.

Your Goals

Together, we’ll start to outline some goals for your therapy. These goals can be broad, like reducing stress or regulating emotions, or more specific, depending on your needs. Setting goals helps to give our sessions direction and ensures that we’re both on the same page about what you want to achieve.

Starting the Practice

During the first session, we might start to include some simple mindfulness exercises. These can include simple breathing techniques, body scans, and guided meditations. It’s all designed to be accessible and tailored to you and where you’re at.

Home Practice

A big part of our work together will be introducing you to mindfulness practices that you can incorporate into your daily life. These are tools and skills that can support you for the rest of our life. You’ll learn how to feel in control of stress and anxiety; how to be comfortable and focused in the present moment; how to treat yourself with kindness and compassion; and loads more.

Practicalities

We’ll also cover a few practical details, such as the length and frequency of sessions, payment, and cancellation policies. This just helps us to know that we’re both on the same page.

Your comfort with everything to do with this process is a top priority. If at any point you feel uncomfortable or unsure, it’s really important for you to share that. Throughout our work together we’ll regularly encourage you to check in with your needs and what’s right for you. This is important to creating a therapeutic environment that works for you.

Your first mindfulness session can a significant step towards better health and well-being. It’s a time to start building a relationship, set goals, and begin the journey of self-discovery and healing. While it might feel a bit overwhelming at first, remember that you’re taking a positive step towards improving your life.

Taking this step shows courage and a commitment to your well-being. Embrace the process, be open, and give yourself credit for prioritising your wellbeing. If you have any questions or concerns before your first session, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help you feel as comfortable and prepared as possible.
